Create A Website for SAU 16 Teachers & Staff

1. Create a work directory for your website, i.e. My Documents  -->  My Webs  -->  class1_website.  Once your site gets several pages, you'll want to create subdirectories for each topic to stay organized.  Now may be a good time to start that organization, or organize (by creating more subdirectories) as you create more pages.  Directory names should be all lowercase with no spaces - use the underscore_ to separate words to make more readable if desired.

Graphics images (.gif's and .jpg's) are often stored in a separate directory called "images" within your directories, but they don't have to be.  Just make sure you store/copy graphics files into your work directory before you insert them onto your page to ensure that the program creates the links properly.

2. Download & Install Netscape Navigator if you don't already have it (the following instructions use version 7.01).

3. Open Composer to create your web pages:

Netscape -  menu Window --> Composer

Save your main home page as "index.html" into the directory that you created for your web work.  Save other pages with names that pertain to topic, i.e. calendar.html, links.html, bio.html, etc. and if you have created subdirectories, save them into the appropriate section.  Remember, all lowercase, no spaces.

Layout page using text, graphics and links.  Composer has help available:

menu Help --> Help and Support Center --> Creating Web Pages option on left

Once your page looks like you want it to, save it again (or save it several times as you work on it).  Menu File --> Save

4. Open the work directory you created for your web in a window:

5. Open your FirstClass Desktop and locate the Home Page Folder:

6. Open the Home Page Folder and position the window of the Home Page Folder on one part of your screen and the window of the work directory on another part of your screen.  Highlight all the files in your work directory (using CTRL and/or SHIFT keys to highlight multiple file names) and drag them onto the window for the FirstClass Home Page Folder (or 'Copy' all files and 'Paste' them into FirstClass Folder).  It should now look like this:

Tech. Services must enable your web account so if you haven't contacted them, do so and ask for your FirstClass web home folder to be activated. Once this is done, you can open your web browser and display your new website at:

http://fc.sau16.k12.nh.us/~emailid (your FirstClass mail ID, usually your first initial, last name)

I created a set of sample pages using the above steps:
http://fc.sau16.k12.nh.us/~kweise

When you want to change your pages, delete the files in the FirstClass folders before you copy changed pages over.  It can take a while for FirstClass to implement the changes you make so if you don't see them immediately, be patient.  Check back a little while later.

ALWAYS CHECK YOUR PAGES USING A BROWSER!  It's easy to forget a file or make a mistake with a link.  Double-check all your pages and links before you announce your new site, and whenever you make changes.
