Website Page Tips
Websites only
support graphics in .jpg or .gif format (some of the latest browsers
also support .png). If you have graphics in other file formats,
they must be converted in order for you to use them on a web page.
The 'default'
page of a website must be named properly for the website to appear.
The following names are recommended:
- index.htm
- index.html
- default.htm
- default.html
Backgrounds can
appear on pages to add textures and colors. They are part of a web
page's property. Many backgrounds are available on free graphics
sites or within clipart directories. Be careful using backgrounds
though - make sure you can read the text!
If you're
linking to a web page or site outside of your own, make sure to precede
the URL with "http://".
There are a few
basic fonts that are supported by many browsers:
- Arial or Helvetica
- Times New Roman
- Verdana
Your computer probably has many other fonts installed, but the user's
computer your page is displayed on may not have those same fonts.
It is recommended that you use standard fonts as much as possible.
If you want to display fancy text, create a graphic file using other
fonts, save it and insert it into your page as a graphic file. Try not
to mix too many font faces on a single page.
An underline on
a web page generally means a hyperlink to another web page or site.
Try not to use underline as emphasis or for headings.
File sizes
equate to page access time - the larger your page and accompanying
graphics, the longer it will take for your page to download to someone's
computer. Try to keep total page sizes between 50K and 100K.
(A 50K page may take 20 seconds to load over a 56K modem).
Graphics images
need to be resized and saved using a graphics program (or resample
feature if your web creation program has it). If you put a large
image on a page and resize it, the internet will still store and
transfer the large file - it will just display smaller.
If you are
creating more than one page, try to make all your pages have a common
look & feel - i.e. the same heading and background and font faces and
colors. You can copy a page and erase the text to create a
template.
If you are
creating multiple pages, make sure you put navigation links on each page
to return to your home page and perhaps a previous page or main section
page.
Put a contact
link on your site so people can contact you. Create a hyperlink
with "mailto: xxxxx@sau16.org".
Do not post
students' pictures without parental permission and use only first names.
Test your site
once you publish it!
