Summer Institute I:  SPDC Mentors

Dates:  July 21- August 1, 2003

Time:  M-F, 8:00-4:00

Stipend:  $800

Resources:  Intel® resources and software, Palm® Personal Digital Assistant

Requirements:  Teacher or administrator in any SAU 16 school district, attend 10-day institute, agree to mentor 10 teachers for 40 hours during the 2003-2004 school year.  This requirement can be met through a combination of mentoring strategies including face-to-face meetings, team teaching with other mentors, on-line mentoring, etc.

Week 1

The Intel® Teach to the Future U.S. In-Service program offers K-12 classroom teachers curriculum designed specifically for their needs. Teachers learn how, when, and where to incorporate technology tools and resources into their teaching. They also learn how to create assessment tools and align lesson plans with state and national standards. The goal is to prepare today's teachers and students for tomorrow's demands.

Curriculum Overview
Trainings consist of 40 hours of hands-on instruction, covering ten modules. Topics include hands-on use of the Internet, Web page design, multimedia presentations, student publications, and development of a showcase unit plan. Emphasis is on effective use of technology in the classroom, research, communications, and productivity strategies, and working in teams to solve problems.

Week 2


Enter the exciting world of e-learning and put your classroom on-line with WebCT.   Participants will learn how to use this tool and have time to build a WebCT site for their class. 

 

Each participant will receive a Palm® Personal Digital Assistant for their use.  Synchronize with your FirstClass calendar, read and send e-mail, browse the web, and edit wordprocessing documents.  Participants will also learn how this tool can be used in the classroom.

 

The Quality School Portfolio is a web-based data management tool for teachers and administrators that includes a student portfolio, gradebook, and student test analysis tools.  Teachers can also allow parents to view portions of the gradebook such as homework or quiz grades.  Training will include the development of skills in research-based decision-making.

 

APPLICATION

 

The intent of this institute is to train in-service teachers who will serve as mentors during the 2003-2004 school year.  You must agree to the following requirements of this program:

ž      I am a teacher or administrator employed by an SAU 16 school district

ž      I have a computer with Internet connection in my classroom

ž      I will attend all ten training days

ž      I have basic skills in the use of Microsoft Office® and Internet Explorer®

ž      I will mentor/train ten teachers in my school for a total of 40 hours

 

I will receive the following:

ž      $800 for completing the two weeks of training

ž      Resources and software from Intel

ž      Palm PDA

ž      80 hours of professional development credit

ž      Additional professional development credit for my role as a mentor

ž      Access to WebCT and QSP

 

Application approval procedure:

·    The goal is to have at least one mentor in each of the SAU 16 schools

·    The maximum number of mentors per school will be determined by dividing the total professional staff by 10

·    Applications will be processed by school on a first come, first served basis

·    Open seats will be made available to other SAU districts which have committed to joining the SPDC consortium once all SAU 16 applications have been processed.
