Kensington School Board Minutes

August 14, 2003

 

The Kensington School Board met on Thursday, August 14, 2003. In attendance were: Mrs. Cheryl McDonough, Chairperson; Mrs. Sue Belanger, Mrs. Dana Donovan, School Board members; Mr. Paul Flynn, Associate Superintendent of Schools; Mrs. Barbara Switzer, Principal.

 

The monthly manifests were signed by the board.

 

Mrs. McDonough called the meeting to order at 6:05 PM

 

Mrs. Switzer gave the principal’s report as follows:

·         Mrs. Switzer invited the board to the “Back To School” picnic scheduled for September 8th at the town park.

·         Mrs. Switzer stated that the same parking and student pick-up and drop-off procedures as last year will be in effect until the completion of the addition.

·         Mrs. Switzer reported that she and several staff members are in the process of interviewing candidates for the Special Education Assistant positions available at KES for the 2003-2004 school year.

·         Mrs. Switzer stated that she and Dennis Dobe, Principal at Newfields Elementary School, recently interviewed Brooke Petrucelli for the position of Technology Integration Assistant. Ms. Petrucelli will work at KES two days per week and Newfields 3 days per week.

·         Mrs. Switzer is also interviewing for the Media Generalist Consultant position.

 

Mr. Flynn gave his report as follows:

·         Enrollment figures for 2003-2004 were given to the board.

·         Mr. Flynn reported that KES would be hiring a part time custodian.

·         Mr. Flynn reviewed the staffing for the 2003-2004 school year.

·         Mr. Flynn noted that this year the board would be entering into negotiations with the Kensington Education Association. It was determined that the all three members of the board will serve on the negotiating team.

·         Mr. Flynn gave the board an update on the progress of the building addition. Mr. Flynn noted that there is some asbestos under the tile at the entrances to the school and would need to be addressed at a future date. Mr. Flynn stated that a problem with the wiring over the intermediate wing of the building has been discovered.  Mrs. McDonough asked Mr. Flynn to investigate whether the problem should have been discovered earlier during the planning stages of the project. Mr. Flynn reported that several trees need to be taken down because of the new septic system.

·         Mr. Flynn noted that the high school project is still in the process of securing permits for the project. The committee is currently addressing wetland issues associated with the project.

·         Mr. Flynn stated that Dick Wendell has been a great resource for the Kensington School District over the summer relative to the building project as well as the renovations at KES. The board asked that Mr. Flynn thank Mr. Wendell for all of his efforts.

·         Mr. Flynn also noted that the keying system to the entire building will need to be reviewed.

·         Mr. O’Malley has taken up his position of Principal at the Cooperative Middle School.

The board will review the Building Use Form for the 2003-2004 School Year.

 

Mrs. Belanger will serve on the committee which will investigate the impact of the No Child Left Behind Act.
