SAU 16 Keyboarding Goals

 

Keyboarding Objectives for Students

  • to develop the correct touch typing technique
  • to key data quickly and accurately
  • to demonstrate operational skills in using the computer
  • to be able to key accurately, at a rate of 20 Words Per Minute (WPM)
  • to understand health and safety issues of using the computer
Preschool -Grade 2
  • Distinguish left and right side of keyboard
  • Use special function keys - Enter, space bar, shift
  • Keyboard alpha and numeric
  • Use correct body and keyboard positioning and posture
Grades 3-4 All of above AND:
  • Know "home row" - use correct finger placement
  • Use special function keys - noted above, plus insert, delete, caps lock, CTRL, ALT, etc.
  • Keyboard alpha and numeric using both main keyboard and number pad without looking at keyboard
  • Use correct body and keyboard positioning and posture
  • Emphasis on accuracy, not speed - speed will come with practice
Grades 5-6 All of above AND:
  • Keyboard at least 12-15 words per minute (wpm) with correct finger placement and not looking at keyboard
  • Use correct body and keyboard positioning and posture - study ergonomics and know to take breaks at least every 20 minutes (younger children need more frequent breaks)
  • Emphasis on accuracy
Grade 7 All of above AND:
  • Keyboard at least 20 wpm with correct finger placement and not looking at keyboard
  • Use correct body and keyboard positioning and posture - know ergonomics of computer use
Grades 8-12 All of above AND:
  • Exhibit competency in keyboarding any written work required for classes
