New Hampshire and Massachusetts had
the highest average SAT scores this year among the states in which 60
percent or more of high school seniors took the college entrance
examinations.
Among high-participation states, Massachusetts had the top math
score, 523, and New Hampshire had the top verbal, 522. A perfect
score is 800, and the national averages, including states with low
participation, were 518 in math and 508 in verbal.
The College Board discourages state-to-state comparisons, partly
because the average scores tend to decline as participation rises.
New Hampshire's average math score was second, 521, and Massachusetts
average verbal score was second, 518.
