Career & Technical Center in Exeter Begins its 24th Year with Expanded Programs and Increased Enrollment

Over 480 students from Epping, Exeter, Newmarket, Raymond, Sanborn Regional, and Winnacunnet high schools will take part in a two-day orientation program designed to highlight the programs and activities planned for the coming school year. ‘’The orientation program is planned by the staff and returning students to help begin the year on a positive note‘’ according to SST Principal Nancy Pierce. “It’s a great way for the students from our six high schools and the SST teachers to get to know one another“. All SST students are expected to attend both orientation days on Wednesday, August 27th and Thursday, August 28th. Transportation from Epping and Winnacunnet high schools will be provided.

Highlighting the second day of the orientation program will be sessions led by Ed Gerety. A resident of Exeter, Mr. Gerety is one of the top professional youth speakers and leadership trainers in the United States. His passion, humor, and ability to connect with young adults are respected nationwide and his SST presentations will focus on respect, developing a positive attitude, leadership, and making a difference. “We’re excited that Ed Gerety is going to be part of our orientation program at SST“ said Health Sciences and Technologies teacher Linda Cutler. “His presentations are full of real life examples of how teens can make a difference in the world today“. Mr. Gerety will work with both the morning and afternoon SST students on Thursday, August 28th.

With the highest enrollment in years, SST is expanding two current programs. Computer Programming will be adding semester classes in Advanced Computer Programming – JAVA and Advanced Computer Programming – C++ during the afternoon session. These classes will be taught by SST Computer Programming teacher Norm Messa in a new lab designed and equipped with the latest computer technology. “For students interested in learning about programming languages and software design, this is the place to be. We’re looking forward to expanding our courses in this high demand career area“ says SST Student Services Counselor Sam Bruno. “Computer Programming, along with our Computer & Network Information Systems program, will allow SST to offer a wide range of Information Technology training to more students in our home high schools.”

For the first time during this summer, four students have been continuing their Biotechnology program. Under the direction of teacher Carolyn Kelley, Biotechnology III offers an internship based program allowing these students to explore various topics and continue research projects at area colleges and biotechnology labs. Also this summer, SST expanded its summer internship program to 13 sites in Automotive Service Technology and 5 sites in Building Construction Technology. “The cooperation and enthusiasm of our internship sites and mentors has been fantastic“ said Principal Pierce. “We’re looking to expand the summer internship option to other programs in the future.“

The annual Parent Orientation Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 10th, at 7 pm in the Talbot Gymnasium at Exeter High School and the SST Open House will be held on Wednesday, October 8th at 6:30 pm.
