NHIAA awards EHS the Sportsmanship Award |
|
|
We were just notified that Exeter High School was selected as the winner
of the New Hampshire Athletic Association Sportsmanship Award for the
2002-2003 School Year. This recognition certainly represents outstanding
leadership in this area by the high school administration, our athletic
director Bill Ball, our coaches and student athletes. A formal
presentation will be made by the NHIAA to Exeter High School in late
September or early October. Congratulations to all. |

|
|
Ocean National Bank donated 24 computers and related equipment to SAU 16
this past week in response to the district’s Technology Committee’s
"Computer-thon" held this spring. Read

School Year 2003-2004 Calendar Updated for School Start Dates (yes,
again!) |
|
|
The final calendar for next year is available. Wednesday August 27
will be start date for K-5 and Grades 6 & 9 and Thursday August 28 will
be start date for all others. Monday November 10 has been changed
to be a teacher in-service day for K-5 only. See latest
calendar. |

EHS Graduation Friday June 13 - At PEA |
|
|
High School graduation is scheduled for Friday June 13 5:30 pm at Phillips
Exeter Academy Love Gymnasium (across from tennis courts) on Court
Street in Exeter (map). Two tickets will be issued for each senior for
reserved seating. Plenty of non-reserved seating is available, as
well as a mezzanine for standing. Doors open at 4:15 for both
reserved and non-reserved seating. Parking is available at PEA for
those who have registered (handicapped parking ticket required), but
other parking is very limited. Shuttle buses will run from EHS
every 10 minutes, beginning at 4pm. |

Summer Band Camps Scheduled for week of August 18-22 |
|
|
Mark your calendars for band students to attend camp this summer.
The middle school is hosting a session for new sixth graders. The
high school marching band holds training from 8:30-3:30 each day that
week and there will be a trip to Canobie Lake park at the conclusion of
the week. Details will be sent home with each student. |

CMS Food Service Department automates the school cafeteria for next
year |
|
|
Computers will be used for all purchasing, inventory, menu planning,
recipes and production planning next year at the middle school.
The Food Service Department anticipates the new systems going "live"
during the week of September 22, 2003. The new lunchroom system
will include a Point-of-Sale terminal (register) and each student and
staff member will have a "debit card" that they will use to purchase

The DOE has informed us that they will not now count the first day of
school for only 6th and 9th graders as a full day of school for CMS and
EHS. Therefore, the
2003-2004 SAU Calendar has been adjusted accordingly with the first
day of school for all students being Wednesday,
August 27, 2003. |

Amundsen at his last Pops concert. Everyone will miss his ability

East Kingston Principal Selected |
|
|
At the East Kingston School Board meeting on Monday, May 5th, Jim Eaves,
presently Assistant Principal at Nottingham Elementary School in SAU 44,
was selected as the new principal at East Kingston Elementary school for
the 2003-2004 school year. Jim will be coming on board effective July 1,
2003. |

We were experiencing problems with some computer equipment. This

|
|
Paul Amundsen will be retiring at the end of the year after 24 years of
service and May 15th will
be his last Pops concert. To see a few candid photos of Paul, please

Assessment testing starting May 5 |
|
|
Several assessment tests will be administered the next few weeks in all
of our schools. Please make sure students get plenty of rest and a
good breakfast so they can do their best. |

Last Day of School dates determined |
|
|
The last day of school for students in Swasey, East Kingston, Lincoln
and Main Street, Kensington, Stratham and the Cooperative Middle and
Exeter High Schools is Tuesday June 17th. The last day for
Newfields Elementary will be Wednesday June 18th. |

Prior EHS Principal passes away |
|
|
Walter Borkowski passed away Sunday morning, April 28th. There will be a
memorial service on Saturday, May 3rd at 10:00 AM at the First Parish
Federated Church, corner of 236 and Academy Street, South Berwick,
Maine. All other services will be private. Walter was part of the EHS
staff and faculty from 1968 to 1994. He served as EHS principal the last
16 years he was at EHS. |

Cooperative Middle School Principal selected |
|
|
The ERCSD Board has appointed Tom O'Malley principal of CMS effective
July 1, 2003. Mr. O'Malley lives in Eliot, Maine and is the current
principal of Sanford Junior High School in Sanford, Maine. He has
12 years of middle school and high school administrative experience, and
also has elementary, middle and high school teaching experience. The
board feels confident that Mr. O'Malley will be an outstanding addition
to SAU 16. |

EHS Drama Club Performs Oklahoma! |
|
|
The EHS Drama Club missed a night of performance due to cancelled school
due to an April snowstorm, but their other shows were enthusiastically

SAU 16 receives grant to open The Seacoast Professional Development
Center |
|
|
The NH Department of Education has awarded a grant of $500,000 in funds,
over the next 3 years, for the establishment of professional development
services for teachers, administrators, and para-professionals. The
Seacoast Professional Development Center (SPDC) will provide educators
with any time, any place, any pace, and any path learning opportunities
for educators in the seacoast region. For

Exeter Region Coop. School Board seeks members for Linden Street Site
Committee |
|
|
The Coop School Board seeks members for the group that will be charged
with developing recommendations on what to do with the current
high-school site on Linden Street once the new high school is built. The
committee will hold public listening sessions, gather information and
then make recommendations to the Board by the end of this year. In an
effort to keep the committee at a workable size, the board requests that
community members who want to be involved explain what expertise they
will bring to the group. Any community members interested in serving on
this committee should send a letter to Sally Boyd, SAU office, 24 Front
St., Exeter, NH 03833. Deadline for submitting a letter of
interest to be on the committee is April 18, 2003. |

Another CMS Math Teacher wins Award! |
|
|
Joshua Frost was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in
Mathematics and Science Teaching from the National Science Foundation.
A group of New Hampshire educators, working with the NH Dept. of
Education, selected Mr. Frost for the award he received last week in
Washington, DC. They chose him after assessing not only information from
the school and colleagues, but also from a critiqued videotape of his
teaching. This award carries a substantial stipend which Mr. Frost is
using to purchase equipment and materials for CMS students. For more

Harlem Rockets vs. Exeter Dream Team |
|
|
Wednesday evening, April 2, the traveling basketball team “The Harlem
Rockets” will take on a team composed largely of Exeter High teachers
and administrators. The 7:00 PM game in the EHS Talbot Gym will benefit
Exeter High’s career program “Jobs for NH Graduates.” Advance tickets
are $6.00 at the JHNG office in the EHS Annex (old Jr. High on Linden
St.) or $7.00 at the door. |

EHS Drama Department Events |
|
|
The EHS Drama Department is holding two major events in the next two
weeks. Saturday March 29th is a Talent Show at 7 pm in the CMS
Meehan Auditorium. The cost is $5 for students and $8 for adults.
OKLAHOMA! is on Thursday April 3rd at 7:30 pm, Friday April 4th at 7:30
pm and Saturday April 5th at 2 pm and 7:30 pm. The admission to
this play is FREE and it's at the High School Annex Cafeteria Stage. |

SAU 16 looking for Computer Equipment Donations |
|
|
The Technology Committee of SAU 16 is kicking off a program to obtain
used computers from area companies, organizations and individuals. The
computers will be rehabilitated by school staff and volunteers for reuse
within the schools and offices of SAU 16. On Monday March 31st, members
of the SAU 16 Technology Committee will be contacting area companies to
make them aware of the program. In addition, links to SAU 16 websites
and word-of-mouth contacts are being used to spread word of the program
throughout the towns of the district. After the March 31st launch date,
the program will be on-going until further notice. For more

SAU Joint School Board approves Asst. Superintendent |
|
|
The SAU Joint Board unanimously approved Jerry Frew for the position of
Assistant Superintendent Curriculum and Assessment. His responsibilities
will also include oversight of Brentwood and East Kingston schools.
Many of us remember Jerry as Principal of the Cooperative Middle School
from 1999 to 2002. We welcome him back and look forward to having
him on board July 1st. |

CMS MathCounts Team brings home the State Championship |
|
|
For the third year in a row, the CMS MathCounts Team has brought home
the State Championship. Mr. Frost is very proud of all the students who
worked so hard to achieve this level of success. Students have
worked after school for months – even on weekends – to prepare for this

CMS Math Teacher wins the Fernand J. Prevost Mathematics Teaching
Award |
|
|
Congratulations to Mr. Adam Wiggin, 8th grade math teacher on the VIP
Team. He has been awarded the Fernand Prevost Mathematics Teaching
Award, an honor given annually to just one outstanding young New

2001 EHS Graduate from Stratham a fatality in March 11th Helicopter
Accident |
|
|
Andrew Stevens, a 2001 Exeter High graduate, was one of the fatalities
in the Tuesday, March 11th Black Hawk Helicopter accident in Fort Drum,
New York. EHS will have a moment of silence Thursday, March 13th
in honor of Andrew and counselors will be available for any students.
Flags will be flown at half mast the week of March 17-21 at all schools
in honor of Andrew.

Newfields School Board Accepts resignation of Barry Ring |
|
|
The Newfields School Board accepted the resignation at the Board meeting
March 5, 2003. Dennis Dobe has accepted the position of Acting
Principal for the remainder of the 2002-2003 school year. The
Newmarket Police Department arrested Mr. Ring on March 6th and charged
him with possession of child pornography. A
letter will

Stratham PTO Presentation of EHS Building Committee postponed |
|
|
The EHS Building Committee presentation scheduled at the Stratham PTO
meeting Tues. Jan 21 @ 6:30 pm is postponed. The PTO will still hold
their meeting, but the EHS Building Committee will not be presenting on
that evening. It has been rescheduled to Tuesday, February 4 at 6:30.

Swasey Central School Plans to Open School Monday January 20th |
|
|
Students were released early Thursday because of electrical problems at
the school and school was canceled Friday. A meeting with local
fire, police, the building contractor, the state electrical inspector
and school administration concluded there are no current safety concerns
and they plan to hold school
on Monday. |

recommends new school over renovation |
|
|
149 individuals (EHS
administration, EHS students, Selectpersons from all SAU 16 towns, town
officials, parents and community members) were invited to the EHS Future
Search on September 19, 2002. 85 individuals attended the meeting on
Thursday, September 19th. 74 of those in attendance participated in
discussion and voting. Of those, 69 (95%) voted YES to pursue the option of
building a new school; there was one abstention vote and 4 voted NO.

Schools Start |
|
|
School starts Wednesday, August 28 for 1-5 and grade 6 at CMS and grade 9 at EHS. Grades 7 & 8 at CMS and grades 10-12 at EHS start Thursday, August
29. Friday August 30 and Monday September 2 are holidays and all students
return Tuesday September 3rd. Kindergarten start dates vary by
school so please check with each school. The Brentwood School Board has
decided to delay opening of Swasey until Tuesday September 3rd.
