Thanks to the lengthy preparations by our technology education, family/consumer science, art, music, and computer teachers, the 5th Annual CMS Career Day was held Wednesday, March 12. Guests from the world of business spoke about 23 different careers. Each 7th and 8th grader was able to sign up for the presentation of her/his choice.
Following is a list of our speakers and a description of their presentation.
Mr. Burke & Ms. Konesko will explain the career of a videographer, video editing and video enhancing. Mr. Burke has focused his area of expertise with capturing the thrill of snowboarding. Actual samples of his work on the snowboard tracks in Vermont will be viewed during his presentation about this highly technical and evolving career. This speaker is of interest to any student interested in the field of video editing and special effects.
Ms. DeSotta is a registered nurse. Ms. DeSotta will review the preparation needed to become a registered nurse and some of the many job options in the field of nursing. This is a good presentation to attend if you are interested in the field of nursing or in related medical fields like, nurse assistant, medical technician, and E.M.T.
Ms. Irwin, R.D. is a registered dietitian and works at Exeter Hospital. She will discuss her duties in that position, as well as other positions a registered dietitian might be hired for and the formal schooling necessary to become a registered dietitian.
Chief Kane works in the Law Enforcement Profession as the Police Chief for the town of Exeter and will present information about this challenging career. Chief Kane will explain the preparation necessary to work in the diverse field of Law Enforcement This presentation is a good choice for students interested in becoming a police officer or exploring the many supporting careers in the field of Law Enforcement.
Mr. Konesko is a civil engineer and works at T.F. Moran Inc. in Keene, NH. A civil engineer works on many areas related to developing land, building roads, the study of the land for how and where to locate a building, like our school building. A civil engineer helps plan for the safe use of land and protection of water areas. Mr. Konesko will explain the civil engineer's course requirements and talk about work he has done as a civil engineer. Mr. Konesko will also talk about other engineering careers.
Mrs. Konesko-Gilbert is an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard and works in Telecommunications. She will be bringing her military experience to the classroom and share the types of communications systems used by our Coast Guard to protect our local fishing fleets, provide coastal security, and keep track of our many commercial shipping carriers. This topic would be of interest to a student interested in any are of military services and to a student interested in a career related to telecommunications.
Ms. Landis is a food writer for the New York Times. Ms. Landis tests baking and cooking recipes and writes a regular column for the New York Times. Ms. Landis' presentation will include a food demonstration for student sampling. Ms. Landis will discuss career options in journalism/writing, food styling - arranging food on plates and making it look as delicious as possible, and testing products like frying pans, vegetable peelers, ice cream makers, and roasting pans. This topic is of interest to the student interest in food related careers and how to make a love for writing fit a full time career in another career field.
Ms. Lazerowich is a Graphic Artist. Ms. Lazerowich will share samples of her art and discuss the course work she completed and the variety of experiences she has had as a graphic artist. This speaker is of interest to students that are interested in a career in the fine arts of paint, calligraphy, screen-printing, illustration and a number of related areas of the graphic arts.
Mr. Lefsrud works for our National Aeronautics & Space Administration, NASA, as a Research Scientist. Mr. Lefsrud will share about his many experiences with NASA as a Research Scientist and the courses he needed for a career in this area of science. Mr. Lefsrud will also talk about the many types of careers that are part of NASA and contribute to our space program. This topic is for a student interested in science, math and technology and the careers related to space exploration.
Sergeant Lopes, USMC, will present career options in our United States Marine Corps, a branch of our Armed Forces. Sergeant Brock will discuss his job as a recruiter for NH-USMC and the variety of employment and training opportunities in this branch of our armed forces.
Mr. Marden is the Head Chef at Abercrombie & Fitch Restaurant in North Hampton, NH. Mr. Marden will present the careers in the food service business and present the background needed to be a successful chef in a moderate to upscale restaurant. This presentation is for the student interested in exploring food service careers.
Mr. Bateman, Mr. Mouzon and Ms. Stewart work for the Merrimack Valley Regional Hospital as Respiratory Therapists. Each provides direct patient services for respiratory care. This presentation will review the course preparation needed to prepare a person for a career in Respiratory Therapy. This presentation is for a student interested in this specific medical career.
Ms. Parisi works for the SPCA and will present information about careers in animal management, animal care, and animal related careers. This speaker will present information about the preparation needed for students interested in animal care and management. **NOTE: a dog, cat, and rabbit will be at this presentation - do not choose this speaker if you have animal ALLERGIES.
Mr. Perry is a professional photographer. Mr. Perry will present information about career opportunities in the field of photography and the preparation necessary to be a photographer.
Dr. Potter is a medical doctor specializing in the field of OB-GYN (Obstetrics & Gynecology). Dr. Potter will present information about this specialized M.D. field and the preparation necessary to maintain a practice. This presentation is especially helpful to a student interested in becoming an M.D. and thinking about having a specialized practice.
Mr. Ricker works for the New Hampshire Resource Network. He is a job developer and will be speaking about a wide variety of careers that are relatively NEW and forming. Mr. Ricker's presentation is a great choice for a student that is not exactly sure what career path he or she might like to follow. This is a JOB FAIR speaker for new careers in every area of interest. Come and hear about that dream career you never new existed!
Mr. Savage has a degree in Marine Science and will explain the preparation necessary and the variety of job opportunities that a person with a degree in Marine Science may work in. Aquaculture is one of the many career areas in Marine Science that Mr. Savage has worked in. This topic is of interest to students that like physical science and are interested in hearing about how to use that interest toward a career in this science related field.
Mr. Spring worked for over twenty-five years in the Motion Picture and Television Industry. Working for Eastman-Kodak Company, Mr. Spring was responsible for all US and Canadian sales and spent much of his time in Hollywood. Mr. Spring worked on the sound stages of many famous films and T.V. series. Mr. Spring will explain about the necessary education and skills needed to work in the entertainment field. This speaker would be of interest to students interested in movie/video production and photography. Limited information about acting is a part of this presentation.
Detective Sgt. Stevens is a member of the Exeter Police Department. Sgt. Stevens will explain the fascinating career of law enforcement and the specialty career of a detective. This career specialty has grown much more scientific and Sgt. Stevens will share his experiences in gathering and studying evidence and the methods of preserving a crime scene for gathering information useful in solving a crime. This speaker is for a student interested in a criminal justice career and also interested in the science used in investigating a crime.
Mr. Tucker is an Associate Director at YMCA Camp Lincoln in Kingston, NH. Mr. Tucker coordinates on-site child through your adult program activities for the summer camp, community support programs like after school latchkey and adult supervised child and young adult academic support and recreation activities. Mr. Tucker's presentation will be of interest to the student that is interested in hearing about sports/recreation, community recreation, and child and family service careers.
Ms. Weise, SAU 16 District Webmaster. Ms. Weise maintains all web pages for the District and has an extensive background in programming and hyper-text markup and she works with student data and designs, maintains, and troubleshoots District data bases. This speaker will include live connection and demonstration into the District computer systems and explain how they work for us each school day. This speaker is of interest to the student that is interested in a career in the very technical end of working with a computer network system and development, maintenance, and trouble shooting of web pages. Ms. Wood is making a career in two areas of the fine arts: she is an artist painter and also has a career in interior design. Ms. Wood will share her experiences in these two areas of the fine arts. She will discuss the course work and experience she has had working in these complimenting careers. This speaker is of interest to a student interested in being an artist painter, interior design, furniture and furniture accessory design and related design fields.
