Press Release - June 5, 2002
Our office has been informed that on the evening of June 4, 2002 several Exeter High School students were allegedly in attendance at a home in Kensington where a 22 year old male was found by Kensington and State Police unconscious in the driveway of the home. The male was transported to the Exeter Hospital and then transferred to Portsmouth Hospital where he remains in critical condition. The victim never was a student at Exeter High School. Our thoughts and prayers are with this individual and his family.

Because this is an outside of school incident, the matter is in the hands of the Kensington and State Police. However, we will offer our complete cooperation with this investigation. - Arthur L. Hanson, Superintendent of Schools

Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr./Civil Rights Day Celebrations
“It’s a holiday, isn’t it? Then why aren’t the schools closed?”

The six Exeter area towns in S.A.U. #16 keep their schools open on Martin Luther King Day. They seek to provide stimulating opportunities for students to learn about Martin Luther King, the Civil Rights Movement, and a wide variety of other issues of tolerance and diversity. King’s widow, Mrs. Corretta Scott King, concurs that keeping schools in session sets the stage for enhanced learning and appreciation.

January 21, 2002, found the ten public schools in Brentwood, East Kingston, Exeter, Kensington, Newfields, and Stratham open and conducting MLK programs. Visiting speakers, discussions, plays, music, reading, writing, and creative projects made each building a hive of students buzzing from one experience to the next.

See pictures of activities at East Kingston Elementary and Kensington Elementary Schools.  Read more about highlights of the day's activities at the Cooperative Middle School.  See what Exeter's Lincoln Street and Main Street Schools did to celebrate.
